Interventions

Congruence. Samantha has low self-esteem issues. Samantha had a happy childhood growing up, her father was very involved and often would take her to school. Samantha started noticing sore throat at tender age. She used to compel when swallowing food. In addition, she also complains of frequent headache. . Samantha started to think it was due to the fact that she did not look like her father. Samantha’s Father was Caucasian, and Samantha had African American features. Her diet was very balanced; although her appetite is seem to have decreased so much since the throat pain began. I informed Samantha that I had also had a similar experience with of having problem with throat but it was better for her to take in some food. There was some resistance, and Samantha did not want to participate in session but as time went own and she realized that we were alike in some ways she began to open up and share more of her problems with me. I allowed Samantha to see my nonverbal gestures and verbal comments to establish that I was genuinely interested in what she had to say to me.Furthermore I would make sure to repeat or ask questions to assure Samantha that I was paying attention to her every word.

Positive Regard (PR).Samantha’s lineage has no sign of such disease. Therefore, I tried to encourage her that it was a simple health problem which was going to come to an end soon. I tried to explain to explain to her the importance of taking warm salt water. In this case, the salt is used to suck the mucus out of the swollen of wounded tissue. In addition, it is recommended that one should take ¼ to half teaspoon of table water with warm water. This is crucial because it helps one to spit out the mucus easily without any sign of pain.
I informed Samantha that with life sometimes things can be abrupt and can take unexpected turns and that things do not always go according to plan that includes friendships and relationships. I also informed Samantha that making decisions regarding one’s life does not always come easy, but that I am here to fully support her regarding whatever choice she decides to make. I discussed with her what reasons makes her wants to continue taking the prescribed medications so that soon she can be well. Samantha’s reasons for staying was more imperative than her reasons for leaving the friendship. However, she was uncertain of the relationship with Gabe, as she was not ready to have everyone in her personal life. I was very understanding of her choice, without bias and judgment, but supportive.


Empathy


Although I was not able to make sense of what its like to be Samantha, I would often share experiences of my life with her that I felt that was relevant to the issues that Samantha was going through which provides affirmation that I too can also relate to those feelings. I also recognize how hard it was for Samantha to try and blend in with her peers, all while trying to maintain her own happiness. Her feelings of depression, low self esteem and identity issues were understood and that with the passing of her father made it become too much to bear.

Carl rogers developed Person- Centered Therapy sometime around the 1940s and it has continuously evolved over a course of 40 years Murdock, 2017). It was also known by three different names, Client-centered therapy, nondirective therapy, and finally in the 1980s he started using term Person-Centered approached. The counselor must display the following actions with their client in order to be successful, which are welcoming, compassion, and congruence

Arbitrarily, through congruence, Samantha was able to trust and express to me how she really feels about her life, and that we shared similar experiences. Samantha began to understand that she does not have to be ashamed for being mixed race, but that her friends need to accept her for who she is, which restored her self-worth. Through Positive regard Samantha no longer worries about being judged by her friends and peers for who she is and who she able to take food easily without any problem. As a counselor I understand, Samantha’s situation which allowed her the extra boost of confidence that she needed to get back involve with her normal activities such as her radio station, school, spending time with family and friends and forgiving herself about the argument with her father understanding that one argument with her father does not negate the overall love Samantha’s father had for her. With these interventions, Samantha was able to continue her radio show, her grades improved, and she began to build better relationship with family and friends.


Incompatibilities:



Person- Centered Therapy also has incompatibles with Christian Counseling. The first incompatibility being that Person-Centered Therapy is different that Christian counseling in regard to the sector of self and phenomenology. With self-knowledge it is attainable when one understands their own self-actualization. In comparison, Christian point of view recommends spiritual revelations and influence of scripture are observed highly. Despite that both Christian Counseling and Person- Centered Therapy have similar views when it comes to freedom and responsibilities, Christian views have certain limitations and Person- Centered Therapy does not (Jones &Butman, 2011). Lastly, Person- Centered Therapy does not focus on the individual’s reality of sin, but in Christin Counseling we know that we all have sinned and fall short of the glory” (KJV, Romans 3:23).

Roger believes that human beings were good, and that their nature was constructive yet trustworthy (Murdock, 2017, p.152). He also believed that human beings had helpful inclination to themselves, and with these habits they promoted growth, advancement, and understanding their full potential which is driving by human behavior (Murdock, 2017, p.152). Roger’s belief was different than other therapist who believed that man’s main problem along with human nature is being corruptive and destructive. Rogers believed that “when man is definitely free to be what he desires most, he’s free to understand his nature as a being able of attention, and then moves forward to wholeness and integration


Conclusion



Samantha has restored her confidence in herself, forgiven herself about the argument that she had with her father, and is comfortable with her self-identity. Samantha has gotten back involved with her radio show, her grades have improved, she has become more social and open with her friends and family. With Person-Centered Therapy Samantha is more confident in her wants and needs and is able to communicate that better regardless of judgement. Samantha will become happy again along with enjoy and being confident with choices she makes regarding her everyday life despite the outcome.
